Every ASTM petroleum test method specifies the glassware to be used — flask dimensions, receiver geometry, viscometer tube constants. When glassware deviates from specification, the test deviates from specification. The result is not an ASTM result. It is a measurement made with non-conforming apparatus. DC Scientific manufactures ASTM petroleum laboratory glassware to the exact dimensions and tolerances specified in each test method — ASTM D86 distillation flasks and receivers, D446 viscometer tubes, D1319 FIA glassware, quartz combustion tubes, and more — with over 150 years of combined glassblowing experience behind every piece.

Certified Reference Materials close the second half of the quality loop. Running the correct test in the correct glassware still produces an uncertain result if the instrument has not been calibrated and verified against traceable, certified values. Paragon Scientific is the only producer in the world to hold dual UKAS accreditation to both ISO 17025 and ISO 17034 — the highest level of accreditation integrity available for reference material production. Their range covers viscosity standards, TAN/TBN standards, ISO 17034 single-parameter CRMs, multi-parameter CRMs, certified pH buffer solutions, and more — all manufactured in the UK, tested at every data point, and supplied with full certificates of traceability.

KB Scientific Instruments is the authorized Midwest representative for both DC Scientific ASTM glassware and Paragon Scientific certified reference materials. Kevin Batt’s background as a former petroleum lab manager gives him a working knowledge of what test methods require and how that applies to your instrument and application. One conversation covers both glassware and standards

What ISO 17025, ISO 17034, and UKAS Accreditation Mean for Your Lab

Accreditation for Testing and Calibration Laboratories

ISO 17025 is the internationally recognised standard for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. All data in Paragon Scientific's Certified Reference Materials is generated exclusively by ISO 17025 accredited laboratories — meaning every measurement contributing to a certified value was made under a quality management system audited by an independent accreditation body. This provides the traceability and confidence required for use in ISO 17025 accredited petroleum testing laboratories.

International Standard for Reference Material Producers

ISO 17034 is the international standard for the competence of reference material producers — it goes beyond ISO 17025 to cover the specific requirements for producing certified reference materials with documented uncertainty, stability, and homogeneity. Paragon Scientific holds UKAS accreditation to ISO 17034, making their CRMs and MPCRMs the most credible certified data available globally. Paragon developed the world's first range of ISO 17034 certified diesel, jet aviation fuel, gasoline, and lubricant CRMs.

UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service)

Is the UK's national accreditation body, recognised by the government to assess and accredit organisations against internationally agreed standards. Paragon Scientific holds dual UKAS accreditation to ISO 17025 and ISO 17034 simultaneously — this dual accreditation provides the highest level of accreditation guarantee available for reference material production anywhere in the world.

Who Uses DC Scientific Glassware and Paragon Scientific Reference Materials

Petroleum Refinery QC Laboratories

Atmospheric distillation (D86 glassware), viscosity (D446 viscometer tubes), flash point, density, CFPP, and cloud point testing require method-specified glassware and traceable reference materials for instrument calibration and verification. DC Scientific glassware and Paragon Scientific CRMs cover every routine refinery petroleum test method.

Aviation Fuel Testing Laboratories

Jet aviation fuel requires testing for flash point (TAG, Abel), density, distillation, freezing point, mercaptan sulphur, acidity, FIA aromatics, aniline point, and smoke point. Paragon Scientific's ISO 17034 CRM range includes specific certified reference materials for every one of these jet fuel parameters — the only ISO 17034 jet aviation fuel CRM range in the world.

Lubricant & Used Oil Analysis Laboratories

Viscosity calibration and verification (all Paragon viscosity standard types), acid number (ASTM D664 / IP 177), and base number (ASTM D2896 / IP 276) are the three most critical measurements in used oil and lubricant analysis. Paragon Scientific TAN/TBN standards and viscosity standards — certified to the highest accreditation level — cover all three. DC Scientific viscometer tubes ensure the measurement is made in conforming apparatus.

Independent Petroleum Testing Laboratories

ISO 17025 accredited third-party testing laboratories require reference materials that carry the same accreditation status as their own laboratory programs. Paragon Scientific's dual ISO 17025 / ISO 17034 UKAS accreditation is the only reference material accreditation that matches and exceeds the requirements of an ISO 17025 accredited test lab. DC Scientific glassware is manufactured to ASTM specifications — fulfilling the apparatus requirements of test method scope statements.

Pipeline & Terminal Laboratories

Diesel CFPP, cloud point, density, flash point, and distillation testing at pipeline terminals and fuel storage facilities for product release. Paragon Scientific's Diesel MPCR Material provides certified values for all five of these parameters in one bottle — a significant efficiency improvement over maintaining five separate single-parameter reference materials.

Research & Academic Petroleum Laboratories

Custom and special blend viscosity standards from Paragon Scientific for non-standard temperature or viscosity requirements. DC Scientific custom glassware fabrication for research apparatus not covered by commercial stock items. Both organisations have the capability to work with non-standard research requirements.

Frequently Asked
Questions

What petroleum lab managers, QC chemists, and laboratory procurement teams ask most often about DC Scientific ASTM glassware and Paragon Scientific reference materials.

What is the difference between ISO 17025 and ISO 17034 accreditation for reference materials?

ISO 17025 is the standard for testing and calibration laboratories — it covers the competence of the laboratory performing measurements. ISO 17034 is the standard specifically for reference material producers — it adds requirements for the production, characterisation, homogeneity, and stability of the reference material itself, and for the assignment of certified values with documented uncertainty. A reference material certified under both ISO 17025 and ISO 17034 by UKAS gives you the highest possible level of confidence that the certified value is accurate, traceable, and stable — which is exactly what Paragon Scientific provides.

A Multi-Parameter Certified Reference Material (MPCR Material) is a single certified reference material whose values have been certified for multiple test parameters simultaneously. Paragon’s Diesel MPCR Material, for example, carries certified values for viscosity, density, flash point, cloud point, CFPP, and distillation — all from the same bottle, all certified to the same accreditation standard. This eliminates the need to maintain six separate single-parameter reference materials, reduces storage requirements, and significantly simplifies the calibration and verification program for a diesel fuel testing laboratory.

Yes. DC Scientific’s ISO 9001 registered facility and experienced glassblowers can fabricate glassware against any ASTM specification or drawing — including non-standard or custom configurations not available from commercial stock. If you have a specific ASTM glassware requirement that you cannot source elsewhere, contact Kevin with the ASTM method and dimensional specification and KB Scientific will work with DC Scientific to confirm feasibility and pricing.

The correct viscosity standard depends on your viscometer type (glass capillary, rotational, cone and plate, CCS, flow cup), the operating temperature range, and whether the standard needs to be silicone-free. Paragon Scientific produces a different viscosity standard type for each combination. Kevin can recommend the correct type and certified value range based on your instrument, temperature program, and test method. Contact Kevin with your viscometer make/model and the test methods you run (e.g. ASTM D445, D5293, D2162).

Paragon Scientific’s certified pH buffer solutions are available at pH 4.00, 7.00, and 10.00, certified at 20°C or 25°C under dual ISO 17025 / ISO 17034 UKAS accreditation. In petroleum and petrochemical laboratories, pH buffer solutions are used to calibrate and verify pH meters used in water quality monitoring, aqueous acid/base titration preparation, and process water analysis. They are also standard calibration references in any laboratory running potentiometric equipment.

Shelf life varies by product: viscosity standards (most types) 24 months; pure water viscosity standards 6 months; mineral oil rotational viscosity standards 12 months; ISO 17034 CRMs 12 months; MPCRMs 18 months; TAN/TBN standards 24 months; pH buffer solutions 12 months. All products are supplied with batch number and expiry date. In-stock availability means the maximum remaining shelf life from the date of dispatch.
